About Sonia Manzano
Sonia Manzano, born on June 12, 1950 in Linwood, New Jersey, is a renowned TV actress best known for her role as Maria on the beloved children’s series Sesame Street. She has won more than ten Emmy Awards for her screenwriting work on the show and received two performance Emmy nominations. In 2019, she began appearing in the Nickelodeon series The Casagrandes.
Prior to gaining fame, Manzano starred in an Off-Broadway production of Godspell while attending Carnegie Mellon University. She joined the cast of Sesame Street in the early 1970s and later became part of its writing staff.
Aside from her television work, she also authored a popular children’s book titled No Dogs Allowed published by Simon & Schuster in 2004.
Manzano was raised by Puerto Rican immigrant parents in New York City’s South Bronx neighborhood.
