About Sonia Delaunay
Sonia Delaunay was a Russian-French artist born on November 14, 1885, in Odessa, Ukraine. She was a prominent figure in the Orphism art movement and gained recognition for her use of vibrant colors and geometric shapes. Notably, she became the first living female artist to be honored with a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre in 1964.
Before achieving fame, Delaunay attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, Germany and later enrolled in the Academie de La Palette after moving to Paris in 1905.
She married fellow artist Robert Delaunay, with whom she had a son named Charles in 1911. Delaunay’s painting “Coccinelle” was even featured on a French postage stamp in 2004 as part of her enduring legacy.
