About Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth was an influential activist born on November 18, 1797 in New York. She was a freed slave and abolitionist who became famous for her impassioned speech, Ain’t I a Woman, delivered in Akron, Ohio in 1851. In 1828, she made history as the first Black woman to successfully win a lawsuit against a former slave owner in order to secure custody of her son.
In 1843, she changed her name to Sojourner Truth after feeling compelled by a religious calling to travel around the country preaching about abolishing slavery and advancing women’s rights. During the Civil War, she played an important role in recruiting Black individuals into the Union Army. Additionally, she wrote and published her memoir titled The Narrative of Sojourner Truth: A Northern Slave in 1850.
Prior to gaining fame, Sojourner escaped from slavery with her infant daughter in 1826 by fleeing from her owner’s home and seeking refuge with a family in New Paltz, New York. Besides being known for her activism efforts, Sojourner is also recognized as the first African American woman to have had a statue placed inside the U.S. Capitol building. Furthermore,she was honored by being included on Smithsonian’s list of their “100 most significant Americans” in 2014.
