About Sofia Kovalevskaya
Sofia Kovalevskaya (1850-01-15) was a Russian mathematician known for her groundbreaking contributions to the field. After completing her studies at the University of Heidelberg, she submitted a dissertation to the University of Göttingen that introduced what is now recognized as the Cauchy-Kovalevski theorem, an important mathematical concept.
As a child, Kovalevskaya decorated her bedroom walls with mathematical formulas, foreshadowing her future career in academia. She achieved several notable firsts for Russian women in mathematics, including becoming the country’s first woman to earn an advanced degree in mathematics, attain full professorship, and edit a scientific publication.
Kovalevskaya grew up alongside two siblings in Moscow as the daughter of Yelizaveta Fedorovna Schubert and Vasily Vasilyevich Korvin-Krukovsky. Later in life, she and her husband Vladimir Kovalevskij settled in Germany.
