About Simone Manuel
Simone Manuel made history when she won an Olympic gold medal in the 100 meter freestyle, tying with Penny Oleksiak and setting an Olympic record of 52.70. She also took home gold from the 4×100 meter medley relay at the 2016 Olympics. All this started when she was five years old – her two older brothers Chris and Ryan had already taken up swimming, and Simone wanted to follow suit! After high school, she went on to Stanford University where she joined the women’s swim team. She first tried out for the Olympic team back in 2012 before heading to Barcelona for the World Championships 2013 where her US team walked away with a gold medal in freestyle relay. Missy Franklin praised her as ‘fearless’.
