About Shirley Hazzard
Shirley Hazzard was an Australian-born novelist, best known for her 2003 novel The Great Fire, which received the U.S. National Book Award. Born on January 30th, 1931 in Sydney, Australia, she spent her early years traveling around Asia with her parents. She published her debut short story collection Cliffs of Fall in 1963.
Hazzard’s earlier work includes The Bay of Noon (1970), which was shortlisted for the Lost Man Booker Prize. In addition to her novels and short stories, she also received the O. Henry Award for her 1976 short story “A Long Story Short.”
In 1963, Shirley Hazzard married fellow writer Francis Steegmuller.
