About Shirley Chisholm
Shirley Chisholm was a pioneering politician and Democrat, born on November 30, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York. In 1968, she made history by becoming the first African-American woman elected to Congress. She served New York for seven terms and in 1972, she shattered barriers once again by becoming the first major-party black candidate for President and the first woman to run for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Prior to her political career, Chisholm worked as a director and educational consultant for Day Cares. Notably, she caused controversy when she visited rival and noted racist George Wallace in the hospital following his shooting in May 1972.
Chisholm’s personal life included two marriages; her first husband was Jamaican private investigator Conrad Chisholm.
