Shelby Hearon, born on January 18, 1931 in Marion, Kentucky, was an American novelist. She is best known for her works such as Armadillo in the Grass and Owning Jolene. The latter work won an American Academy of Arts and Letters Literature Award.Prior to gaining recognition as a novelist, Hearon studied at the University of Texas at Austin and began writing her debut novel, Armadillo in the Grass, in 1962. She received an Ingram Merrill Foundation fiction fellowship during her career.Hearon was born and raised in Kentucky before embarking on her successful career as a novelist.
