Sheila Widnall (born July 13, 1938) is an American astronomer and aerospace researcher. She made history by becoming the first female Secretary of the Air Force, a role she served in from 1993 to 1997. During her tenure, she became the first woman to lead an entire branch of the U.S. military within the Department of Defense.Widnall graduated from MIT with a degree in Aeronautics, obtaining her S.B. in 1960, S.M. in 1961, and Sc.D. in 1964.An accomplished scholar, Widnall conducted research on potential causes that might have led to the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.She has two children with her husband William Soule Widnall.
