About Sheela Basrur
Sheela Basrur was a Canadian physician known for her work in community health and epidemiology. She was born on October 17, 1956, in Canada. Prior to her role as the Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health and Assistant Deputy Minister of Public Health, she served as an assistant professor at the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto. In 1998, she made history by becoming the first Medical Officer of Health for Toronto.
Basrur received widespread recognition for her leadership during the SARS outbreak in 2003. Her efforts were highly praised by many for their impact on public health initiatives during this critical time.
Basrur had a daughter named Simone who was born in 1992.
