She made history as the first African American and woman to be elected Mayor of Minneapolis, a position she held from 1994 to 2001. Throughout her career, she received the prestigious Rosa Parks Award for her contributions to politics.
Prior to entering politics, Belton pursued studies in biology and sociology at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. During her time in office during the mid-90s, she successfully implemented initiatives that led to a reduction in crime rates within the city.
