About Sarah Grimke

Sarah Grimke (born November 26, 1792) was an American women’s rights activist, abolitionist, and writer. She is known for inspiring famous suffragists such as Lucy Stone and Lucretia Mott through her activism and writings. In 1837, she published her renowned essay, “Letters on the Equality of the Sexes and the Condition of Women.”

Before gaining fame as an activist, Grimke learned about the evils of slavery while growing up on a plantation in South Carolina. As a young girl, she secretly gave reading and writing lessons to one of her family’s slaves and taught weekly Bible lessons to enslaved children who worked on her father’s plantation.

A notable moment in Grimke’s life was when she challenged the hypocrisy of a church that claimed inclusiveness but denied true membership to slaves. Later in life, she joined the Quaker community.

Grimke came from a prominent family; she was one of four children born to judge and plantation owner John Faucheraud Grimke and his wife Mary. Notably, she was also the sister of fellow activist Angelina Grimke.
