Sarah Michelle Gellar is an actress, producer and entrepreneur who is best known for her role as Buffy Summers on the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” She has since gone on to star in films such as “The Grudge” and “The Air I Breathe.” In addition to her acting career, Gellar is also a passionate advocate for causes such as education and animal rights.
Gellar was born on April 14, 1977 in New York City, to parents Arthur and Rosellen. She has two younger siblings: Karen, who is also an actress, and Robert. As a child, Gellar took ballet lessons and appeared in off-Broadway productions. When she was seven years old, she was discovered by an agent while eating ice cream at a restaurant. Her first acting role was in an episode of the soap opera “All My Children” in which she played Erica Kane’s daughter, Kendall Hart.
Gellar’s breakout role came in 1997 when she was cast as Buffy Summers in the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” The show ran for seven seasons and earned Gellar critical acclaim for her portrayal of the iconic character. After “Buffy,” Gellar starred in several films including “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” “Cruel Intentions” and “Scooby-Doo.” She also lent her voice to the character of Daphne Blake in the animated film”Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.”
In addition to her work in front of the camera, Gellar has also been involved behind the scenes as a producer. She executive produced the 2004 film “Southland Tales” and served as a producer on the 2013 film “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.” She also produced and directed several short films including “A Trip to Unicorn Island” (2010) and “Veronika Decides to Die” (2015).
Gellar is married to actor Freddie Prinze Jr. with whom she has two children: Charlotte Grace (born 2009) and Rocky James (born 2012).
