About Sarah Childress Polk
Sarah Childress Polk was the wife of the eleventh President of the United States, James K. Polk. She served as the twelfth First Lady from 1845 to 1849 and outlived her husband by 42 years, having the longest widowhood of any former First Lady. Born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on September 4, 1803, she attended the Moravians’ Female Academy in Salem, North Carolina.
Polk met her future husband when she was only twelve years old and had no children of her own. However, she raised a nephew named Marshall Tate Polk and assumed guardianship of an orphaned niece, Sarah Polk Jetton.
