About Sandra Cisneros
Sandra Cisneros is a novelist born on December 20, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois. She is known for her contributions to Chicana literature including the award-winning novel The House on Mango Street (1984) and the short story collection Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories (1991).
Cisneros received the Clay McDaniel Fellowship and the American Book Award for her work. As a child, she wrote her first poem at age ten and was encouraged by her high school teacher to pursue writing as a career. Her debut work Bad Boys was published in 1980.
She has had a significant impact on Chicana literature and established both the Macondo Foundation and the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation. Sandra Cisneros comes from a Mexican-American family background; she was one of seven children, with only one surviving sister. Her parents are Alfredo and Elvira Cisneros de Mora.
