About Sandra Boynton
Sandra Boynton is a prolific cartoonist and illustrator known for her children’s books, including “Philadelphia Chickens,” “Moo Baa La La La,” and “Barnyard Dance!” She was born on April 3, 1953, in Orange, New Jersey. In addition to her work as a cartoonist, she is also a songwriter and has composed several albums to accompany her children’s books.
Before gaining recognition for her work as a cartoonist, Boynton studied English at Yale University and performed with the Yale Glee Club. She then pursued a career as a theatre director, studying drama at both the University of California at Berkeley and the Yale School of Drama.
In addition to her many books, Boynton has illustrated over four thousand greeting cards and created designs for products ranging from plush toys to calendars.
Boynton was married to author and Olympian James McEwan until his death in 2014. They had four children: Caitlin McEwan, an actress and director; Keith Boynton, a playwright and filmmaker; Devin McEwan, a whitewater racer; Darcy Boynton,a writerandteacher.
