About Sandra Bland
Sandra Bland (February 7, 1987 – July 13, 2015) was a Black civil rights activist from Naperville, Illinois. She gained attention for her social media activism under the hashtag #SandySpeaks where she spoke out against police brutality targeting African Americans. Bland came to national prominence after being pulled over for a minor traffic violation and subsequently arrested following a dispute with an officer that escalated into allegations of assault.
Before her advocacy work, Bland attended Willowbrook High School before pursuing agricultural studies at Prairie View A&M University in Texas. She became involved in the Black Lives Matter movement and began sharing videos of police brutality on social media in January 2015.
Bland’s encounters with law enforcement were not limited to the incident that led to her arrest; she had faced over ten previous encounters with police in both Illinois and Texas and owed thousands of dollars in fines. Tragically, she was found dead by hanging in her jail cell, which authorities ruled as suicide.
Bland hailed from Naperville, Illinois, where she grew up alongside her four sisters.
