About Sally Ride
Sally Ride (1951-05-26) was an American astronaut and physicist who made history as the first American woman to enter low-Earth orbit. Born in Los Angeles, California, Ride joined NASA in 1978 and went on to fly two missions aboard the Challenger shuttle: STS-7 and STS-41-G.
Before her career as an astronaut, Ride was a nationally ranked tennis player during her youth. She also pursued physics studies at UCLA, Stanford University, Swarthmore College, and Harvard-Westlake School for Girls.
Notably, at the time of her first spaceflight in 1983, she became the youngest American to travel into space.
Ride married Steven Hawley in 1982 but later divorced him in 1987. Following her passing, it was revealed that she had been involved in a 27-year relationship with Tam O’Shaughnessy – a female tennis player and professor.
