About Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander
Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander (born January 2, 1898) was a civil rights activist and attorney in the 20th century. She made history as the first woman to serve as secretary of the National Bar Association and was appointed to the President’s Committee on Civil Rights. As a founding member of the national Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, she played a crucial role in advocating for equal rights.
Before her rise to prominence, Sadie was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She achieved significant milestones by becoming the first African-American woman in the United States to earn a PhD from an American university and later went on to be admitted and graduate from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
Additionally, she made history when she became the first African-American woman to be admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar. In addition to her legal achievements, Sadie also served as Delta Sigma Theta sorority’s first national president and acted as its legal advisor for 35 years.
Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander came from a family with deep roots in Philadelphia; her parents were Aaron Albert Mossell II and Mary Louisa Tanner. Her siblings were Aaron Albert Mossell III and Elizabeth Mossell. In 1923, Sadie married Raymond Pace Alexander with whom she had two daughters: Mary Elizabeth Alexander Rae Pace Alexander.
