S.E. Hinton Feet

S.E. Hinton, born on July 22, 1948 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is an American author known for her work in young adult fiction. She achieved fame with the publication of her classic novel The Outsiders at the age of sixteen.

Hinton was honored with the prestigious Margaret Edwards Award by the American Library Association in 1988, recognizing her significant contribution to young adult literature.

Before gaining literary acclaim, she drew inspiration for The Outsiders from observing rival gangs at her high school in Oklahoma. The novel was published when she was a first-year student at the University of Tulsa.

In recognition of her lifetime dedication to writing and storytelling within young adult literature, Hinton received the Arrell Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.

Born Susan Eloise Hinton, she married engineer David Inhofe in 1970 and they have a son named Nicolas.
