Ruth Pitter was a British poet known for her 1936 work entitled A Trophy of Arms. She was the first woman to receive the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. Before gaining recognition as a poet, she worked at the British War Office and was also employed by a Suffolk furniture company. Despite living in the 1900s, her work relied upon rules of rhyme and meter established in previous centuries. Ruth Pitter was born on November 7, 1897, in England to parents George Pitter and Louisa Murrell Pitter, who were both teachers.
