Ruth Negga is an Ethiopian-Irish actress. She is best known for her roles in the films Precious and 12 Years a Slave, and on the television series Misfits and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Negga was born in 1982 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to an Ethiopian mother and an Irish father. Her parents separated when she was two years old, and she was raised by her mother in Limerick, Ireland. Negga has said that her upbringing gave her a “unique perspective” on race relations.

Negga began acting as a teenager, appearing in community theatre productions in Ireland. She studied at Trinity College Dublin and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art before beginning her professional career as an actress.

Negga’s breakout role came in the 2009 film Precious, based on the novel Push by Sapphire. She played the role of Clareece “Precious” Jones, a pregnant teen girl living in Harlem who is abused by her mother (played by Mo’Nique). The film earned critical acclaim and won several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Picture.

In 2013, Negga starred in another acclaimed film, 12 Years a Slave. Based on the true story of Solomon Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man who is kidnapped and sold into slavery, 12 Years a Slave was widely praised for its powerful portrayal of slavery in America. The film won several Oscars, including Best Picture once again.
