About Ruth Krauss

Ruth Krauss was an American children’s author and poet, born on July 25, 1901 in Maryland. She is best known for her 1945 work “The Carrot Seed” and also wrote other notable works such as “The Happy Egg,” “Somebody Spilled the Sky,” and “The Cantilever Rainbow.”

Before rising to fame, she studied at the Parsons School of Design in New York City before publishing her first illustrated work, “A Good Man and His Good Wife,” in 1944.

Krauss joined the Writers’ Laboratory at New York’s Bank Street College of Education in the 1940s where she honed her craft. She married Crockett Johnson, a fellow children’s book author, in 1941.
