Ruth Kelly (born May 9, 1968) is a British Labour Party politician and economist. She has served as a member of Parliament for Bolton West and held positions such as Economic Secretary to the Treasury and Financial Secretary to the Treasury.
Before beginning her political career, Kelly earned a Philosophy, Politics, and Economics degree from Queen’s College, Oxford University and obtained her master’s degree from the London School of Economics. Prior to politics, she worked for the Bank of England and wrote economics-themed articles for The Guardian.
Kelly was born in Northern Ireland and spent her early years in Limavady before moving to England. She is the granddaughter of Irish War of Independence fighter Philip Murphy; she is married to Derek John Gadd; and they have four children.
