About Ruth Graves Wakefield

Ruth Graves Wakefield, born on June 17, 1903 in Massachusetts, was an American entrepreneur known for inventing the Toll House Cookie, which later became the first chocolate chip cookie. Prior to her fame as a culinary figure, she owned and operated the Toll House Inn where she delighted guests with her self-created desserts.

Wakefield made her groundbreaking discovery when she found that by dropping pieces of Nestle chocolate into cookies it would not melt but instead soften. This led to a surge in sales for Nestle’s chocolate and prompted the company to make a deal with Wakefield: they would print her recipe on their chocolate boxes while providing her with a lifetime supply of their product.

She hailed from East Walpole, Massachusetts and in 1926 tied the knot with Kenneth Donald Wakefield.
