About Ruby Bridges
Ruby Bridges, born on September 8, 1954 in Tylertown, Mississippi, is a prominent civil rights leader. She rose to prominence as an iconic figure in the civil rights movement after she made history by becoming the first African American child to attend an all-white school on November 14, 1960.
Prior to her fame, Bridges bravely volunteered to be the first black student to attend William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, Louisiana. At that time, New Orleans was heavily segregated. Her courageous actions were supported by her mother despite facing significant opposition and adversity.
Her inspiring story became the subject of the 1998 TV movie “Ruby Bridges.” Following her public life achievements and activism for equality and justice for all children regardless of race or background, Ruby married Malcolm Hall with whom she had four sons. Her mother’s name is Lucille Bridges.
