About Rose Wilder Lane
Rose Wilder Lane, born on December 5, 1886 in De Smet, South Dakota, was a prominent journalist and author. She is best known as the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder, the author of the beloved Little House on the Prairie series. Lane pursued her own successful career as a writer, producing novels, travelogues, and works of political journalism.
Before gaining recognition for her literary endeavors, Lane worked as a Western Union telegrapher. Afterward she transitioned into freelance writing and eventually became one of the highest paid female journalists by the end of the 1920s.
Lane’s potential contributions to her mother’s famous Little House series have sparked much debate among literary scholars. Her extensive connections within the publishing industry likely helped facilitate Laura Ingalls Wilder’s book deals.
Born to Laura Ingalls Wilder and Almanzo Wilder in De Smet, Dakota Territory, Rose spent her early years moving through various states with her family. She married Clare Gillette Lane in 1909; however the marriage ended in 1918.
