About Rose O’Neill
Rose O’Neill (June 25, 1874 – April 6, 1944) was an American illustrator, best known for creating the popular Kewpies comic strip. Born in Pennsylvania, she became renowned as the world’s wealthiest female illustrator during the early 1900s.
By the age of fifteen, O’Neill was already working as an illustrator for The Great Divide and The Excelsior. She later became a cartoonist for New York City’s True magazine before gaining fame with her creation of the Kewpies comic strip. This led to the highly successful Kewpie doll line.
Besides her work as an artist and creator, O’Neill also published works of fiction and poetry. Notably, she played a role in the women’s suffrage movement by marrying her Kewpie cartoons to poster art advocating “Votes for Women.”
O’Neill was one of seven children born to William and Alice O’Neill. After spending her youth in Pennsylvania and Nebraska, she lived in New York and Missouri. Her first marriage to Gray Latham ended in divorce before she married and later divorced novelist Harry Leon Wilson.
