About Rosalind Plowright
Rosalind Plowright, born on May 21, 1949 in England, is a renowned opera singer. She gained fame for her performances in English National Opera productions such as Othello, Salome, and The Turn of the Screw. Plowright also performed alongside Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti in productions of Il Trovatore, Die Walkure, and Aida at London’s Royal Opera House.
Prior to her success, she received training at the London Opera Centre and Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music. Her career took off after being cast as Agathe in a 1975 Glyndebourne Touring Opera production of Der Freischutz.
In later years, she transitioned to become a mezzo-soprano and made her debut at New York’s Metropolitan Opera in a 2003 staging of Leos Janacek’s Jenufa. In 2007, she earned a Grammy Award for her portrayal of Gertrude in a recording of Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel.
Plowright spent her formative years in Worksop, Nottinghamshire before settling in Salisbury.
