About Roberta Smith
Roberta Smith is an American journalist, art critic, and academic lecturer known for her work with The New York Times. She was born on August 10, 1948 in New York City, New York. In 2011, she became the co-chief art critic for The New York Times and has received several prestigious awards including the Frank Jewett Mather Award for Art Criticism.
Prior to her career at The New York Times, Smith grew up in Lawrence, Kansas and attended Grinnell College in Iowa before returning to her birthplace of New York City in the early 1970s. Notably, she is the first female to hold the position of co-chief art critic at The New York Times.
In 1992, Smith married fellow art critic Jerry Saltz.
