Roberta Flack, born on February 10, 1937 in Black Mountain, North Carolina, is an R&B singer known for her hits “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” “Where is the Love,” and “The Closer I Get to You.” She was awarded a full music scholarship to Howard University before working as a student teacher in Chevy Chase. In 1973, her song “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” earned her a Grammy Award. Flack married Steve Novosel in 1965; they divorced in 1972.
