About Rita Dove
Rita Dove (born August 28, 1952 in Akron, Ohio) is an African-American poet who served as U.S. Poet Laureate from 1993 to 1995. Her notable works include Sonata Mulattica and The Darker Face of the Earth.
Before gaining fame, she attended Miami University and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Dove received the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for her collection Thomas and Beulah published in 1986.
Dove married Fred Viebahn and they have a daughter named Aviva born in 1983.
