Rebecca West was born on December 21, 1892, in England. She was a feminist intellectual, journalist, and author known for her politically and historically-themed works such as Black Lamb and Grey Falcon, The New Meaning of Treason, and A Train of Powder.
In addition to her non-fiction writing, West also wrote novels; her debut work of fiction, The Return of the Soldier, was made into a film in 1982 starring Alan Bates and Julie Christie.
Despite leaving school at sixteen years old, she quickly gained fame as a journalist and respected critic. Her articles were published in prominent newspapers including The New Republic, the New York Herald Tribune, and The Daily Telegraph.
West’s birth name was Cicely Isabel Fairfield. She married Henry Maxwell Andrews at thirty-seven years old. She had a son named Anthony West from her ten-year affair with author H.G. Wells. Rumors also suggest that she had affairs with Charlie Chaplin and newspaper magnate Lord Beaverbrook.
