About Rebecca Hammond Lard
Rebecca Hammond Lard was a poet born on March 7, 1772 in Massachusetts. She is known for her long poem “On the Banks of the Ohio,” which she published in 1823, as well as her collection of poems entitled “Miscellaneous Poems on Moral and Religious Subjects” in 1820. Rebecca was the eldest of ten children born to Priscilla and Jabez Hammond and became a schoolteacher at fourteen years old.
She married Samuel Lard in Vermont in 1801 and had four children before their divorce in 1828. Notably, she was one of the first female teachers in Jennings County, Indiana.
