Rachel Dolezal is a civil rights activist and former Africana studies instructor who gained notoriety for her controversial claims about her racial identity. She served as the Chair of the Police Ombudsman Commission and the President of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in Spokane, Washington, but lost all three of her positions after accusations of her lying about her race surfaced publicly. Dolezal graduated from both Belhaven University and Howard University, where she received her Masters of Fine Arts. She served as the Director of Education and Curator at the Human Rights Education Institute in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho from 2008 until 2010, but resigned amidst a series of hate crimes targeting herself and the institute. She was also a part-time art instructor at North Idaho College from 2005 to 2013 and a part-time instructor at Eastern Washington University from 2007 to 2015. In her personal life, Dolezal was married to Kevin Moore from 2000 until 2005, and they had a son named Franklin. In 2016, she had a second son named Langston in honor of Langston Hughes. Dolezal gained national attention in 2015 when it was revealed that she had been living as a black woman, despite being born to white parents. She was interviewed by Today Show host Matt Lauer about her racial identity and was featured in an exclusive article in Vanity Fair, but her claims were met with widespread criticism and accusations of cultural appropriation.
