About Queen Margrethe II
Queen Margrethe II was born on April 16, 1940, in Copenhagen, Denmark. She is a member of the Danish House of Glucksburg and has been the reigning queen since she was crowned at the age of thirty-one.
Before becoming queen, Margrethe became first in line to her father’s throne at thirteen years old after an amendment granted eldest female children of regents the right to rule. She pursued her education by taking archaeology courses at Girton College, Cambridge, and studying at the Sorbonne, Aarhus University, and the London School of Economics. She is fluent in Danish, French, English, Swedish, and German.
Margrethe was born to Ingrid of Sweden and King Frederik IX at Copenhagen’s Amalienborg Palace. Her marriage to Henri de Laborde de Monpezat resulted in sons named Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim.
