About Princesa Isabel
Princesa Isabel, born on July 29, 1846 in Brazil, was a member of the House of Braganza and the daughter of Emperor Dom Pedro II and Empress Dona Teresa Cristina. She became heir to the throne after the passing of her siblings.
During her time as Regent of Brazil while her father was absent, she signed the Lei Aurea into law, effectively freeing all slaves in Brazil. Following a military coup that ended her family’s reign, she lived in exile in France for the last three decades of her life.
Princesa Isabel married Prince Gaston, Count of Eu, and had three sons (Pedro de Alcantara, Luis, and Antonio) and one daughter (Luiza Vitoria). She is remembered for her significant role in Brazilian history as an advocate for abolition.
