Pleasant Thiele Rowland (born March 8, 1941) is an American entrepreneur best known for founding the American Girl doll company. Born in Illinois, she started the company after being unable to find suitable dolls for her nieces.
Rowland graduated from Wells College in 1962 and pursued various careers including teaching, news reporting, anchoring, and authoring children’s textbooks before becoming an entrepreneur.
A noteworthy aspect of Rowland’s entrepreneurial journey is that she funded the American Girl doll company with $1.2 million earned from royalties as a textbook author.
In 1977, she married philanthropist Jerome Frautschi.
