About Piper Kerman
Piper Kerman, born on September 28, 1969 in Boston, Massachusetts, is a memoirist best known for her bestselling prison memoir that served as the inspiration for the popular Netflix series Orange is the New Black. After being incarcerated for a year on drug trafficking and money laundering charges, she became a board member of the Women’s Prison Association.
Before fame, Kerman grew up in an affluent Boston family and attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. In 2014, she received the John Jay College Center on Media, Crime & Justice’s prestigious Justice Trailblazer Award. Her involvement in criminal activities derived from her romantic relationship with a female drug dealer.
An openly bisexual individual, she married author and magazine publisher Larry Smith in 2006.
