About Pina Bausch
Pina Bausch was a German dancer and choreographer born on July 27, 1940. She is best known as the founder of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch modern dance company and received numerous honors during her career, including the Kyoto Prize, the Laurence Olivier Award, and the Europe Theatre Prize.
Some of her most famous works of dance theater include Blaubart, Nelken, and Two Cigarettes in the Dark. Prior to achieving fame, she began her training at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Germany during her mid-teens. She later continued her education at New York’s Juilliard School before performing with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet Company.
Bausch also had an appearance in Federico Fellini’s early 1980s film And The Ship Sails On. Her personal life included a marriage to Dutch costume and set designer Rolf Borzik until his death from cancer in 1980. She then welcomed a son named Ralf-Salomon with Ronald Kay in 1981.
