Penny Marshall (born October 15, 1943) is an American director best known for her role as Laverne DeFazio in the sitcom Laverne & Shirley. After her acting career, she transitioned to directing and helmed successful films such as Awakenings, A League of Their Own, and Big.
Marshall made history with Big by becoming the first female director to have a film gross over $100 million. Prior to her fame in Hollywood, Marshall began tap dancing at the age of three and grew up on Grand Concourse in the Bronx. Notable figures like Neil Simon and Calvin Klein also hail from that area.
