Penelope Wilton, born on June 3, 1946 in Scarborough, England, is an English actress known for her work in television. She has appeared in popular shows such as Ever Decreasing Circles and Doctor Who. In 2010, she began portraying the character Isobel Crawley in Downton Abbey.

Prior to her acting career, Wilton attended a convent school with her sisters Rosemary and Linda in Newcastle upon Tyne before making a name for herself in stage productions.

Wilton’s talent has earned her numerous nominations at the Olivier Awards – over four to be exact. She was married twice and is also the mother of a daughter named Alice.
