About Patricia McKissack
Patricia McKissack, born on August 9, 1944 in Tennessee, is a renowned novelist best known for her contributions to the Dear America historical fiction series and an installment of Scholastic Press’s Royal Diaries series. She received three Coretta Scott King Awards and was a finalist for the Newbery Medal between 1990 and 1995.
After attending Tennessee State University, she briefly worked as a high school teacher before publishing a biography of poet Paul Lawrence Dunbar in 1984. McKissack also wrote several childhood memoirs including The Dark Thirty and Someplace Special.
In addition to her literary career, Patricia collaborated with her husband Frederick McKissack on youth-oriented biographies of prominent African-Americans; he was previously a United States Marine-turned-U.S. Army engineer.
