About Patria Mirabal Reyes
Patria Mirabal Reyes was born on February 27, 1924, in the Dominican Republic. She was an activist known for her opposition to the regime of dictator Rafael Trujillo. Along with her sisters, she formed an anti-Trujillo organization called the Movement of the Fourteenth of June after witnessing a massacre carried out by Trujillo.
Tragically, Patria and her two sisters were assassinated in November 1960 for their activism against Trujillo’s dictatorship. The only surviving sister, Dede Mirabal, later opened a museum in honor of her slain siblings.
The Mirabal sisters earned the nickname “Las Mariposas” (The Butterflies) for their underground and above-ground resistance efforts against Trujillo’s oppressive rule. Their spouses also faced imprisonment due to political activism.
