Pancho Barnes was a pioneering aviator. She was born on July 22, 1901, in Pasadena, California. Barnes made a name for herself as a pilot and broke Amelia Earhart‘s air speed record. She also participated in the Women’s Air Derby.
Before becoming an aviator, she drove her cousin to flying lessons and decided to learn to fly herself during this period.
Her aviation accomplishments were widely publicized and inspired generations of female pilots. Barnes was married four times and had several children. One of her sons later opened an aviation business near Los Angeles, California.
