Pam Munoz Ryan, born on December 25, 1951 in Bakersfield, California, is a renowned Mexican-American novelist. She is known for her bestselling books such as Becoming Naomi Leon and Esperanza Rising, and was the recipient of the Willa Cather Literary Award in 1999. In addition to her novels, her children’s nonfiction work When Marian Sang achieved acclaim by winning both the Orbis Pictus Award and the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award.
Ryan spent her childhood in California’s San Joaquin Valley before obtaining her master’s degree from San Diego State University. Notably, many of her children’s books have been translated into Spanish, further widening their reach. As a granddaughter of a Mexican immigrant, she often celebrates her Hispanic heritage through her literary works.
Together with her husband, Pam Munoz Ryan raised four children while also establishing herself as an influential figure within literature.
