Otep Shamaya is an American singer, songwriter, poet, actor and artist known for her work as the lead vocalist of Otep, a metal band. She was born on November 7, 1979 in Austin, Texas.
Before gaining fame as a musician, she formed her self-named band in Los Angeles in 2000. Known for releasing songs like “Menocide,” Otep has been known to provoke strong reactions from various groups such as Men’s Rights Advocates.
In addition to her musical career, Shamaya has spoken at the Democratic National Convention in 2008 and has been open about her lesbianism since the early days of her career.
