About Opal Lee
Opal Lee, born on October 7, 1926 in Marshall, Texas, is an activist and community leader. She is known by some as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth.” Lee began her professional activism career in the 1970s after retiring from teaching.
Before embarking on her activism journey, she attended Wiley College in Marshall, Texas where she earned her bachelor’s degree. She later obtained her master’s degree at North Texas State University.
In June 2021, at the age of 94, Opal Lee was invited as an honored guest at the Juneteenth bill signing ceremony and stood alongside President Joe Biden.
She spent her childhood in Marshall before eventually moving to Fort Worth.
