About Olive Elaine Morris
Olive Elaine Morris was a British-based activist and community action leader known for her work in the feminist, Black nationalist, and squatters’ rights movements of the 1970s. Born on June 26, 1952, in Jamaica, she emigrated to South London when she was nine years old.
In 1969, Morris gained attention for attempting to intervene as police were beating a man outside a record shop in her neighborhood. She ended up being beaten and arrested herself. This experience led her to join the Black Panthers in 1970.
As a co-founder of the Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent and a key figure in the Black Women’s Movement in the UK, Morris made significant contributions to these movements throughout her life.
She was recognized with a Google Doodle in the UK on what would have been her 68th birthday.
