About Nydia Velazquez
Nydia Velazquez, born on March 28, 1953 in Puerto Rico, is a prominent politician affiliated with the Democratic Party. She began her political career after graduating from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras and obtaining her master’s degree in political science from New York University. In 1983, she embarked on a career as a member of the New York City Council.
In 1993, Velazquez made history by becoming the first Puerto Rican female member of the United States House of Representatives for New York’s twelfth district. She served in this capacity for twenty years before being re-elected to Congress as a representative for her state’s seventh district in 2013. Notably, she also chaired the Congressional Hispanic Caucus for several years.
Velasquez hails from humble beginnings – she grew up with eight siblings in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico as the children of a sugar cane farmer and political activist. Following her move to the United States, she married Paul Bader.
